Numark 4TRAK Midi Controller – Modified Custom Map (Updated with v1.30)

Hey Numark 4TRAK Users, after spending a few days with the Numark 4TRAK midi controller, I decided that a few changes were needed to the Traktor mapping. The map consists of 3 maps, that you will need to import via Traktors Controller Manager (found in the preferences menu).

Importing the map

In order to make your 4TRAK work with Traktor 2, you will need to import 2 maps. A map for the MAIN unit (the part with the platters) and a map for the FX unit. The extended mapping that I have created will also be needed in order to make the 4TRAK work as described below (or in the youtube video here).

4TRAK-MAIN (version 1.10):

Press Add…  then Import the 4TRAK-MAIN-110.tsi and set the In-Port and the Out-port to send and receive from the 4Trak (Midi).

4TRAK-FX (version 1.10):

Press Add…  then Import the 4TRAK-FX-110.tsi and set the In-Port and the Out-port to send and receive from the 4TRAK-FX (Port 1).

4TRAK-PETER-MUNCH-MAP-EXTRAS (version 1.10):

Press Add…  then Import the 4TRAK-PETER-MUNCH-MAP-EXTRAS-110.tsi and set the In-Port and the Out-port to send and receive from the 4Trak (Midi).

 What changed? What’s new?

1. Stripsearch

Search without using the shift button. The strip search function is now active all the time. (Warning: If you have humongous hands or if you are more clumsy then the average joe, you might want to change this setting back to its original state).

To revert to the original setting, add modifier conditions (in the mapping details) M2 set to value 1 for channel A & C. M3 set to value 1 for channel B & D.

2. Gain Function set to relative

I found it annoying that I would have to “dial in” to the gain before being able to adjust the gain. So I decided to make the gain relative, so when you want to raise the gain, you just raise it with no need to find the “sweet spot” before. The original setting with soft takeover still works, just hold down the shift and the gain will work as the original map. Let’s say that you have raised the level multiple times and your gain control are close to the max, just hold down the shift and “reset” the gain control.

3. Monitor PFL

A solution to the missing meters on the channels. I simply dropped the stripsearch LEDs and made them into channel level meters instead. Now it is easy to see if your channel is active (outputting music) before you load up another track.

4. Control of FX 3 & 4 on Assignable faders

The faders next to the browsing section is now set to adjust the dry/wet of effect 3 & 4. Holding down shift will only set the faders maximum to around 50%. It makes it easier to use with Reverbs and Delays that you might not want to set to 100% wet.

5. Selection of FX 3 & 4.

The assignable rotary knobs next to the browsing section is set to scroll through the effects banks of 3 & 4. Click down on the rotary will activate the effect.

6. Instant filter.

The 3 assignable buttons within the browsing section has been programmed as follow. The assignable buttons under the “file tree” and “favorites” buttons are set to load Traktors Filter (FILTR) and activate it. Clicking again will dis-activate the filter.

Clicking the assignable button under the “songs” button will set the assignable rotary knobs in a “edit setting” state. Rotating the encoder will change the resonance of the filter, clicking down will switch between low-pass and hig-hpass filter. If the middle assign button is not active – rotating the Assignable encoder will keep scrolling through effects and disengage the filter.

Remember to activate the FX directly on the channels in order to use the Filters from Effect 3 & 4.Which leads to my next mapping.

7. Effect Unit 3 & 4 On (On Channel A, B, C and D)

Now that we have extra filters set up on Effect channel 3 & 4, it would be nice to be able to switch on the effects on that actual channels without having to use the mouse on the computer. Simply hold down shift and the FX buttons above the Gain controls on each channel, will switch to Effect 3 & 4. I haven’t had a chance to program the FX buttons so that they give exact feedback of the state they are in, once the shift button is being held down, I will work on that asap. Feel free to do it if you feel like it and post the updated map on this thread.

Now what – What’s the score – What comes next – ?

I still haven’t figured out what to use the extra Assignable buttons above the “Set Master” button for. What do you guys use it for?

Please share your ideas for other cool ways to improve this map.

(UPDATE): DOWNLOAD VERSION 1.20 HERE: PM-MAP V120

New Feature: When holding down shift (both the left and right one), FX Buttons on top of each mixer channel will show the setting of FX 3 & 4.

(UPDATE): DOWNLOAD VERSION 1.30 (BETA) HERE:

New Feature: This mapping works with Traktor Pro v. 2. Make sure that your FX slot 3 is set to group! Hold down the left shift button and press the assign button above the set master button. The left set of Hot Cue buttons will enter HOT FX mode (The buttons will light up in red).

To choose a HOT FX PRESET, hold down shift and press Hot Cue 1 to 5. There are 5 presets.

To exit the HOT FX MODE hold down shift and press the assign button again above the set master (left of the platter).

Please notice that this is a BETA version. I will try to optimize the FX settings and make the presets even better over the next couple of weeks.

Hi, but 4trak will works with SERATO ITCH + SERATO VIDEO ? Where I can find the maps for it please ? Thanks – help please. Regards.

Reply

No. 4Trak does not work with Serato Itch or Serato Video. NS6 does.

Reply

Thanks.
thanks, is better to buy NS6 or is the same ? What is the best choise ? I wanto to do Vj first steps and I must buy the hardware to do this.
For now I have the PA system, and a powerfull notebook I7, full of my loved music. I need to buy the hardware/software to do dj work , mixing, and video sincronized with music, in an easy way at the begin, and test after test do the best. I have seen the NUMARK NS6 + serato ITCH + serato video plugin + Novation Launchpad with Ableton Live 8 launchpad edition, is this the right hardware and software to use and buy ? What are your opinions ? THANKS. Aj
Excuse bad english, sorry.

Reply

@Ay I think you want to go for the NS6! It’s for Serato Itch and Serato Video. 4Trak is for traktor – so not video DJing with that for now :(

NS6 is what you need :)

Reply

Any chance you can post a modification for the NS6 to have the strip search meters function as VU meters? That would be awesome!!!

Reply

I don’t own an NS6, so I wouldn’t know. Maybe send Numark a suggestion to implement it in upcoming versions?

Reply

Ok NS6, any suggestions fr VJ setup ? What controller else and software ? I want to mix video, texts, effects, with music, thanks.

@Ay – The answer is 42!

Hi Peter !

could you give me a tsi with only a few of your improvements?
I mean the Functions “Gain functions set to relative”, “stripsearch without pressing shift” and the awesome feature “Monitor PFL”. These specials are really awesome!
And i got another Question, that i can´t solve by myselfe, because i´m very bad in programming my own tsi-file ;).
Could you tell me how to make the platters more sensitive?

Before i bought the 4trak, i mixed with ns6. i could chance the sensitive for the ns6.

Greets from Germany, Bamberg (That´s why my english so bad ;))

Hi,
Thanks for the awesome mappings, they are really great and helped me a lot. I have the 4Trak since 3 weeks and I have questions especially how to use a sample deck with four slots and loaded one shot samples without using the keybord of my laptop!
What I mean: I choose deck d as my sample deck with four slots in it. Is there a posibility to play some one shots like pull up siren, claps, voices, etc. by using the hot cue buttons 1-4???
Your last update was the HOT FX, maybe there is a possibility to do the same with a combination of the buttons Shift, Assign (above Set Master) and Hot Cue buttons 1-4……( let´s call it Hot Samples)
Sorry for such a lot questions, but as I said, I am an absolut beginner with the 4Trak and i have no experience in creating mappings……..!!!
Maybe there already exists a similar solution to my “one-shot-sample-problem” and I don´t recognized it yet.
Perhaps you can upload another great tutorial video………..

Thanks for reading

Kind regards,

Pienczy

submitted email address did not receive download v1.3
can you send directly to my email address I would like to try on my new 4trak

Reply

Sorry for the late reply. Been busy DJing :) hehe… Did you ever get version 1.3?

Reply

Wow, this is really impressive work and I’m very tempted to use your map, but would like to get better at making and customising my own. One thing I’d really like is to use the LEDs above the strip search to indicate the loop size – can I ask how / where you found out what CC / midi messages would light which LED? Thanks.

Reply

Good question. Lost and lots of experimentation, do you own a 4Trak? I am guessing you do…

Reply

Hi Peter,

Just to confirm these maps will adjust the Traktor 2 software that is supplied when i bought the unit and not another version of Traktor? having the levels showing in the led’s above the strip search make this unit just about perfect!

Reply

I honestly cant tell you – I use the Traktor 2 full software.

I am having trouble mapping the .tsi files in the controller setup…the settings revert every time I import or add them via controller setup. Doesn’t matter how many times I import or ‘add’ them, can’t get them to stay…any help Peter?? thanks a ton

Reply

hmmmm…. that’s strange. I would reach out to Numark’s tech support (eg. via facebook) – they are really awesome.

Hello Peter! I mix since a 15 years with my vinyl lounge and i have just purchased the 4 TRAK! I could see on your video that it is possible to have the MONITOR on the PFL STREAPSEARCH how have you done! I am on WINDOWS XP PC and the TRAKTOR provides with the 4TRAK. Thank you very much hoping to get a response. CybOr

It’s tough to explain – I would just download the mapping and check out what I did in those files. But honestly… the Monitor on the stripsearch wasnt that complicated. At least not at complicated as the Hot Cue FX functions… Arrrrrrrrr… late nights! :)

Reply

Hi… nice mapping… one question: Is it possible change the master vu for yellow leds and center leds to chanel vu metters?

Reply

Hmmm – not sure I understand. Can you elaborate?

Reply

Peter… thanks for your tsi… I use your config to add my personal tsi… I use the original mapping, and i set the yellow leds to vu metter(copy from you) and set relative gain… I think this is the best config…near original but with is more important (vus and gain) !!! Thanks a lot… If you want to analize my tsi ill send to you, and after this you”ll post here.

Reply

If you find out the address of the master leds i think it will be possible to reverse with yellow leds …. you’re the boss !

Reply

two questions, as i am new to mapping. i have down loaded your map to my desk top. but it wont 0
open. tsi format any sugestions?

do u have any step b step guides u can send me o how to load your map and how to drop the strip lights and convert them to function as per your video?

thanks

Sorry. I didn’t have time to do a step by step guide in this round. Maybe later on.

Check the article re. how to load the TSI’s. These TSI’s work with 2.1. 2.5 and later will need some tweaking of the TSI’s.

Reply

Hi Peter…. if i do an UPGRADE my traktor to 2.6… ill lost my set up ?

Reply

Peter… i made a upgrade to 2.6… everything is the same…everything is OK !!!

Reply

Hi Does your mappings work with the 4 trak version of traktor? For ex. I am not able to find FX channels 3 or 4 in my traktor.

Reply

This map was made for Traktor 2.1. Not the 4Trak version :(

Reply

Hey, I came across you on YouTube and u seem to have a really good grip on the 4trak. I just upgraded from the ns6 and I’m having a lot of trouble adjusting. So, with tht being said here are my questions lol

1 is it possible for the layout of the tracks playing to be like itch?

2 I like how u set the channel gains. Can I import those without changing everything else?

Sorry to break balls,

Gio

Reply

Not sure I understand you? Did you upgrade from BS6 to a 4TRAK?

1. the 4TRAK works with Traktor only. It will never look like itch :)
2. no – you would have to set those channel gains up manually then. (you could load up my TSI and use it for reference).

Reply

Hey, wow thanks for the quick reply :)

Ya, I had the “bs6″ lol but i didn’t like how limited it was so I sold it and bought the 4trak not realizing how different traktor was. My only issues are the channel gains and the views of the program itself. I really like how u did the channel gains and will def do as u suggested and use urs for reference. Is the no possible way to customize the deck views? I can’t believe I’m gonna say this but that’s the only thing I found itch was more advanced (or urser friendly)

Reply

Unfortunately you can’t change the waveform display to itch style viewing. Don’t despair – you will get use to it. :).

Love the video n wanna give it a try. Is there any way you can send me the most updated mappings via a link in an email? Thanks also I noticed in your overview video that the master uv meters were assigned to the individual channels, does that come in the mappings as well? Thanks again, look foward to rockn out with the new maps. Happy Holidays

Reply

Just an idea for the stripsearch LED’s, wouldn’t it be useful to activate the LED as VU meter when there is a PFL activated and leave them as stripsearch when there is no PFL activated ? I don’t know if it is possible.

Dear Pete
I just found your website I just want to say Man you are a Genius!

Yeah, Peter, this map scheme is the cat’s pajamas!!!

Reply

Hi Peter, I’ve tried importing this map several times. It has never fully worked and seems to be making the whole thing glitch every time I try.

Any input would be appreciated…….

Thanks,

Dan
